Yachting 2026.16

Yachting 2026.16

We like little Jones Island. It was one of the first places we visited aboard Fiona Bean. At the time, it seemed quite an adventure and far from our Anacortes home.

The challenge is that everyone likes Jones and there isn’t a lot of room for boats. We’ve passed by many times and had to move on because there was no room for us. We got lucky today, maybe because it was a little windy and the sea was choppy. We’re on the more exposed south side of the island, but conditions are good now.

We deployed the Zephyr and headed for shore to do a round-island hike.

A water tower. The campgrounds, mostly used by kayakers, have a good fresh water supply.
I’m going to guess turkey vulture. Someone will mock me if I’m wrong.
Gotta admire the tenacity of the madrona/arbutus.

Bonus

Our last Canadian sunset at Port Browning. We crossed back to the US the next morning.
A Port Browning flower.

Beautiful pictures as always! Loved the water tower, and the Lion Librarian! “Where a SHHHH! can be roared.” Turkey vulture, I would buy. May be just a Wild Turkey.

Wait–I drank one of those . . .

I know Arbutus shows up in Horacic poetry and Celtic/Stanford art song, and its phrase “My Love’s and Arbutus” means: (Wikipedia) “In these ways the Arbutus tree symbolizes the strength, beauty, and uniqueness of the human spirit and our ability to grow in the midst of suffering; and to live fully, even in the face of death and dying.” Apropos, no?

Love. MEB (Back in PDX for 2 days.)
