Have you watched the Apple TV series Widow’s Bay? It’s set on a small New England island that is under the control of an evil spirit. When displeased, the spirit can bring terrible storms that start and stop suddenly.
I think Wallace Island in the Canadian Gulf Islands must be similarly cursed. I don’t know the name of the local daemon, so I’ll call it George Wallace.
The two small coves on Wallace require a stern tie. Three times we’ve tried and only today have we succeeded. When we drop the anchor and prepare to take the stern line to shore, George causes the wind to suddenly whip up. I kid you not. One minute it’s five knots, the next it’s fifteen and Étude is blowing into the boat next to us.
We finally beat the curse today thanks to helpful nearby boaters. Through cooperative effort, we got Étude tied down. At which point, the wind dropped to two knots and stayed there for the rest of the afternoon.
