We have three wind-prediction apps, two are expensive professional grade. None have been worth a darn over the past week. Our four-and-a-half hour crossing of the Strait of Georgia was supposed to be smooth with a three knot breeze. Instead, it was over fifteen knots. That merely raised the level from “ideal” to “bumpy”, but I’m tired of wind and ready for a break.
We like to visit Page’s Marina in Silva Bay either before or after the crossing. It’s a friendly, family-run place with good facilities. There’s a Provincial Park about three kilometers away, good for stretching the legs and maybe a dip.
Winner of the “cute little boat” contest – as judged by me. Not cute exactly, but a nice color. We visited the weekly Farmers’ Market, but it were more crafts and community events than produce. Just after we arrived, the wind picked up one of the white awnings and dropped it on a parked car. When the crank is turned, the waves undulate, rocking the boat, and causing fish to pop up from the water.Drumbeg Provincial Park – lots of beach and water action yesterday. Mary Anne used this natural “staircase” to go from beach to trees. That’s Gabriola Passage with the current running about four knots. A couple of years ago, we encountered five Orcas frolicking as we passed through at slack. We stopped dead and watched until they moved on.
I loved the cute boat contest winner! Now, if they need a caretaker, and can fit a piano aboard . . . Yes, orcas must be respected! I plan to be in Oak Harbor on 27-28 for Wolfgang’s birthday! (Not Mozart, BTW) Love, MEB
