Our Talented Friend

Our Talented Friend

When you spend time bobbing around on the sea, you make boating buddies. It begins by seeing familiar faces at different places, then cocktails, then plans to meet up at another anchorage. Eventually, you find yourselves at each others house for dinner.

Marlene and Greg are some of our earliest buddies. That’s their Nordic Tug, Tradition 2, above. We’ve seen them in the San Juans, at Blind Channel, and places between. Marlene, a highly-trained medical professional, once consulted by phone when I had a problem while at anchor in the Broughtons (a.k.a. The Middle of Nowhere).

I was aware that she had an interest in quilting, but lacked a clear vision of what that implied. Today while visiting Anacortes aboard Étude, I got a chance to see a little of her work on display. There were three quilts, so I took three photos. If there had been one hundred, I’d have taken a hundred.

There are details – beads, shiny thread – that aren’t apparent in the photos. A pity because the closer you look, the more you see.
Look carefully, maybe zoom in, at the seemingly bare yellow areas. They’re full of dragonflies.
This quilt was inspired by the work of Gustav Klimt.

She is, indeed, talented.

Beautiful. It is nice that someone with such talent is carrying on this tradition of quite long standing in the US. Not sure if still the case, but Clark County used to have a quilting competition as part of its annual county fair. It was truly impressive. Maybe your friend should compete. I think they give a goat and a pig as a prize, or at least a blue ribbon. One of our Cali neighbors made a beautiful quilt for Ben when he was just a young boy. A a wonderful gift that will long remain to renew the memory of a wonderful neighbor.

An interesting treatment of Klimt’s “Woman in Gold”. All very lovely!

Wow! Fabulous! And after playing for the musical “Quilters” for three years at Artist’s Rep, I became enamored and appreciative of the art form!

These are truly “Ones of a Kind!”

Gorgeous!! What a good eye she has! Love, MEB
