Meanwhile…

Meanwhile…

On the downhill side of Jerome lies a former mansion, now the Jerome State Historic Park (a museum).

James S. Douglas built the mansion just above his Little Daisy Mine in 1916. He designed the house as a hotel for mining officials and investors as well as for his own family. It featured a wine cellar, billiard room, marble shower, steam heat, and, much ahead of its time, a central vacuum system. Douglas was proud of the fact that the house was constructed of adobe bricks that were made on the site.

He also built the Little Daisy Hotel near the mine as a dormitory for the miners. In an unavoidable metaphor for our out-of-control wealth distribution, the hotel is now a private residence.

Outside the building, we found three devices built to crush ore.

The twin rock wheels roll in a circle, crushing ore underneath.
This machine grinds ore like grain under a “mill stone.”
A more modern solution. This device pounds ore with metal hammers.
The mine’s medical clinic.
Electrical devices used in the mine…
…including some art-quality insulators.
We’ve all seen enough cartoons to know what that plunger does, right?
This once high-tech device infused liquids with carbon dioxide to create fizzy drinks.
That’s the former workers’ hotel in the background. I’ve been told it’s on AirBnB.
