Olympia

We reached our turnaround point just in time to wait out a couple of days of wind and some rain. Neither was a bother because we’d tucked up in a slip at Swantown Marina, just a short walk from the center of Olympia.

We’ve been here during the pandemic and enjoyed the shops, restaurants, and waterfront scenery.

This is not Swantown, it’s Percival Landing just below the State Capitol building. It looks better at high tide.
There’s a boardwalk that runs the length of the waterway that’s lined with docks and art.
Tugzilla is a wooden pocket tug build by the well-known builder Sam Devlin. In one of life’s coincidences, I shared a tandem desk in seventh grade home room with Sam’s older sister Jamie.
Tugzilla can be yours for $178,000. Handmade boats aren’t inexpensive.
Nipper is an early Nordic Tug 32. Compare her to Impromptu, which was built about 20 years later. A lot more wood (and maintenance) and a very different “stack”.
Meet my new bestie Ruth. She was helping the Department of Fish and Wildlife do some on-the-water staff training at Swantown.
We met this fellow along the boardwalk. Herons are easy to photograph. It didn’t move a feather the entire time we were there.
We had a very nice seafood lunch near Percival Landing at Olympia Oyster House. Over their 101 years, they’ve morphed from an oyster dealer into a restaurant. Not for gourmets, but a fine choice for folks like us who appreciate straightforward, old-school seafood.
