Obscure Art

Obscure Art

Do you know that nestled among the restaurants, galleries, and trinket shops of Old Town Scottsdale lies the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art? I’d be surprised if you do. It’s found at the end of a row of pubs and cafes. Only a few small signs show the way.

We haven’t visited for a while, so decided to drop in today to see what’s going on.

First up was Tidal Sky by Casey Curran. These intricate kinetic pieces open, close, and wave about when a crank is turned. Some reminded me of the dance-like movement of sea anemones.

This gallery showcased Arizona art from the 1970s.

This fairytale house is made of paper, lace, clay, and more. Is that a princess in the tower?

No. No it is not.

Works by James Perkins from his Burying Painting exhibition.

But wait! There’s more, including Squidsoup’s mesmerizing sound-and-light show in a darkened room. Also beautiful, very abstract, studies of the sun’s movements by Evan Roth, an artist from Berlin. Captured on quilts!

If you’re in Old Town and had your fill of ice cream and/or margaritas, put on your pathfinder hat and follow the signs to SMoCA.
