Into the Woods

Into the Woods

Let me introduce you to the Kiwi Flyer. This intrepid Subaru (that’s sue-BAR-oo) was tasked with towing all manner of outdoor and water sports equipment.

Towed to where?, you ask. We left Kaikōura bound for Abel Tasman National Park for a few days of walking and beach lounging. Our first stop, as usual, was for coffee.

Sometime in the Eighties, though none of us can remember exactly when, Richard, Miriam and I walked a day’s worth of the three-day coastal trail. Due to questionable planning, we returned with no food, and plenty of appetite. I’m sorry to say we plotted to pinch biscuits (cookies) from neighboring female campers. But never did.

The trail is pretty easy, at least the parts I’ve walked. It’s wide, smooth and largely flat with climbs over ridges between bays. These days you have to reserve a spot if you want to stay in one of the camping huts. Tenters can usually find a spot along the way.

The campground in the distance is where the biscuit heist was plotted.

After about two miles, we arrived at Coquille beach. Various birds tried to court our favor for bits of lunch. None succeeded.

After noshing (eating) our sandwiches (sandwiches), we reversed course and wound up, naturally, at the park’s pub.

The tide was going out by the time we returned. The entire bay dries.
