I Promised Myself

I Promised Myself

Before we get to my photos from the Spur Cross trail at Cave Creek, I have something I want to get off my chest.

I’ve lost a lot of sleep lately thinking about the sorry state of my country. Maybe you have, too.

It’s not supposed to be this way. Our tripartite government should ensure that the system self-corrects. But when the Legislative branch is controlled by craven opportunists and the Judicial is dominated by tunnel-vision ideologues, the system fails.

It’s almost beyond comprehension to see a man holding a phone get slammed to the ground by a pack of undisciplined monsters, then shot multiple times – in the back. How bereft of humanity must one be to call the victim a domestic terrorist and the murders patriots?

As Nobel Laureate Paul Krugman wrote, “To be honest, I wish I believed in Hell, because if it did exist, the enablers would be going there along with the monsters.”

I didn’t want to write about this. We all know what’s happening. But I’m worried that because I’m posting about hikes and flowers, you’ll think I don’t care. Mary Anne and I are trying to help in the ways we can be most effective. I hope you are, too.

But I don’t think that foreswearing any joy that comes our way is the answer. Woe can lead to despair can lead to resignation can lead to surrender. And that’s exactly what they want.

So let’s take a moment to enjoy a beautiful Arizona morning.

This is something of a rarity around here: water!
The saguaros have more branches than we’ve seen in other places. More water?
Some are just weird.
We saw several prickly pear like this. What gnaws round holes?
Someone started a collection of mini-cairns.

Wise words. We are all feeling it so deeply.

But when this all first started, before we even knew how dark it was going to become, I still gave my sons the advice that one of the best forms of resistance is embracing.joy.& moments of pleasure, relishing time in nature, and treasuring moments with friends and family.you love.

Hike on and post away, my friend. We all need the palata cleanser.

Well said

Like Joan said: “Well said!”

I am convinced there is a Hell—many of my former partners and piano students might agree!

(That level of Hell where my talking never stops!)

The rare water pic—did a Saguero spring a leak? The weird-shaped one looked like an Olivander Wand—ready to give a Cactiliarmus Spell!

Love to you both! MEB

Darrell

On board 100%. My worry is that so many people are utterly clueless about how the system actually works that they have no way to critically evaluate or produce creative ideas for soluitons. That is where I put my mental effort. Educate the unaware; think new and differently. But don’t forget the good every day. Like your blog.
