Bowen Island

Ever hear of Bowen Island? Me either. It’s a small place twenty minutes from Vancouver by ferry. They tell me it’s a bedroom community, but there’s also a lot of undeveloped land and parks.

We set out early from Silva Bay on Gabriola Island in order to cross the Strait of Georgia in calm seas. It’s about a two-and-a-half hour journey. We were treated to views of the Vancouver skyline and the Bowen Island ferry.

The Union Steamship Marina is a popular place with day trippers as well as boaters. We met up with our friends Peter and Ann. You may remember them from our trip to the Broughtons last year.

Our Vancouver friends, Alison and Barry, came for a visit and took us to the other end of the island for a short walk along the shoreline. Most of my photos were too mediocre to show. Some days you have it, some days you don’t.

Here’s one of Mary Anne that I call, “You must be at least this tall to take this hike.” Also, an “artistic” photo of a foxglove.

We found this interesting but seemingly abandoned house. There were others partially completed, along with six or eight substantial but unused docks.

Perplexity revealed that the houses were part of a planned super-luxury development that never took off. The house is on the market for $18.6 million.

Tomorrow is Canada Day! We’ll visit the festivities on Bowen Island with Peter and Ann. I hope to have some interesting photos to show you.

It will be nice to be among people who don’t hate their fellow citizens and aren’t intent on taking health care away from their most needy neighbors.
