A Tropical Transit Stop

A Tropical Transit Stop

I travelled extensively in the South Pacific as a younger man and found that I prefer Islands full of Polynesians to ones overrun by Caucasians. That’s why Hawaii seems a better stop-over than a destination to me. But to each their own.

We stopped for a couple of days at the Royal Hawaiian on Waikiki on our way from Auckland to Seattle. It’s a lovely old hotel with superb service and a nice bit of beach. To top it off, we were upgraded to an ocean view suite.

That’s Diamond Head in the background. I was once driven up there to smoke dope with a woman I didn’t know. But that’s a different story.

  1. As we are having a snow storm with a sprinkling of ice here in Portland, like some sort of white tropical drink with no flowers, but drunk with cleats on our shoes in high winds–but also having one like we’re having, I believe, in Seattle–I’m sure you can’t wait to get back to the Frigidaire that is Our Northwest!
    Welcome back!
And thanks for the stop-over at the Royal Hawaiian. Those are spectacular wooden doors and orchids . . .
I want to hear more of the dope on Diamond Head!
Love, MEB (P.S. Happy Valentine’s Day to you both, and don’t forget S.W.’s Birthday!)

  2. I overlooked this post. Glad I did. It would have tipped me over the edge as the cold of the northwest winter bit with snow the day this post arrived. Can almost taste that pleasant warm tropical breeze and hear the gentle waves lapping at the sands. And the suite is truly fine. My envy runneth over.
