Yachting 2026.8

Yachting 2026.8

We decided to stay at Denham Bay because the weather was good and the surrounding pleasant. There’s not a lot to do here, but there was a walk up an abandoned road to a waterfall and local swimming hole. We were advised to take bear spray (Mace), just in case.

There’s nothing dramatic about the walk, it’s typical of what you find around here: signs of former development, birdsong, and wind in the trees. I thought I’d show it to you to give a feeling for what walking in the islands is like.

Bear spray. Returned unused.
Mary Anne’s family called these “Indian pipes”. I’m sure there is a more politically-correct name these days.
These pipes route water from the stream to provide the Denham Bay resort with water. It’s run through various filters before being consumed by the guests. The strap is used to adjust the pipe intake as stream flow varies seasonally.
The waterfall and swimming hole.
After visiting the waterfall, we took a spur road to the beach.
This is what happens to a dock in turbulent waters.
There must have been something along the shore that this old breakwater was intended to protect.
A very, very rusty bit of iron pipe. Some interesting “nodules” have formed inside.
Rusted cable has formed a scary spider or crab.
