TBG I

TBG I

In a series of posts about Tacoma a while back, I mentioned that some folks view the place as a lesser Seattle. That is a view I do not share. The same might be said of the Tucson-Phoenix relationship. Sure, Phoenix is a lot larger and has more going on, but what does go on in Tucson is very nice. And the setting on the southern slopes of the Santa Catalina range is spectacular.

The Tucson Botanical Gardens may be overlooked by visitors heading to better-known attractions. It’s their loss. Although the focus is on cacti, there are other things to see.

To keep this post from getting too long, I’ve split our visit into two parts. We’ll look at butterflies and flowers this time, other things in the next post.

Butterflies

The small Butterfly house includes a hatchery (do butterflies “hatch” from cocoons?). We met a young butterfly wrangler carrying a cage of butterflies that had just finished their transformation.

Flowers

Did you really think I’d visit a garden and not take lots of flower photos?

The Butterfly Gardens in Saanich (north of Victoria on Vancouver Island) is also a great stop, located very close to its world-famous nearby attraction, the Buchart Gardens. Particularly fun for kids.
