The Canal Convergence seemed a bit sparse this year. The exhibits were nice, but there were fewer of them than in previous years. Nevertheless, I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to show you what was there.

The octopus – or space alien, or whatever it is – shown above was a big hit with little kids. There is a drum at the base of each tentacle which, when pounded upon with enthusiasm, sends waves of colors upwards.

I called this canal-based coil Large Intestine, but its real name is Long Wave. Here are two examples from its large repertoire.

When left alone, this exhibit presented itself as a ghostly white mask floating above the crowd. But when someone had their face scanned…

A pair of “fences” made of ever-changing lights alongside the canal.

This kalaidoscopic piece comes to us from clever folk in Melborne, Australia. Endless kids loved sitting on it. Endless parents snapped photos.

The music-synchronized fire show is always a big hit. Very fun to watch and very hot, even at a distance. Doing its bit to increase the world supply of greenhouse gases, for sure.
